Bernie had a successful career in a number of sports, including Australian Rules football and squash. He won the Best and Fairest trophy for Port Melbourne in the VFA in 1954.
Bernie started running with St Kevin’s when he was 54 and completed over thirty years of continuous involvement as a competitor or senior official.
Bernie assisted in setting up courses, officiating and timekeeping for APSOC for more than twenty years.
