Geoffrey Westcott (1942-) – Life Member 1989

15 January 2017

Geoff is not the best known of the Association’s Life Members. In over thirty years of competing, he has not once breasted the tape to take a handicap or fastest time trophy. One wonders what he has done to be bypassed by the handicappers, or perhaps he stands as testimony to the difficulties of winning an event.

Geoff’s association with St Kevin’s AAC commenced in the mid 1950’s when he competed as a schoolboy in the club’s junior teams. He held school records in the Under 16 and Under 17 880 yard events. He competed for the College in its last appearance in the ACC competition in 1957 and in its first in the APS in 1958, where he ran in the Under 17 440 yards and the Open 4 x 880 yards relay.

Upon leaving school he became very involved with his club, competing both in track and field and cross country. His efforts in the early and mid-1960’s helped to hold the club together in an unspectacular era. He was a committee member for over ten years, holding the Treasurer’s position on occasions. He was always a club member valued for his involvement and reliability, and was Track Captain for many seasons.

Within the APSOC, Geoff was Secretary 1967-71 and handled the job with diligence and flair. He competed often and gave much to the Association, and was honoured with Life Membership in 1989.
